Deeply embedded in English folk history the story of Robin Hood has captivated the imagination of generations. Together with his band of 'Merry Men', living as outlaws in the vastness of Sherwood Forest, he reputedly made attacks on wealthy merchants, Church officials and Norman tax collectors who travelled through and around Sherwood Forest.

Twelfth and thirteenth century England saw peasant farmers living very hard lives raising crops and flocks. They were heavily taxed and tythed by both the Church and the conquering Norman oppressors. The law was harsh and punishmensts severe. Many peasants lived in fear and a few were driven to live outside the law - as outlaws in remote or inhospitable parts of the country.
